About us
Gothenburg Pain Lab was founded by Associate Professor Paulin Andréll, MD, PhD, and Professor Axel Wolf, RN, PhD in 2021. Associate Professor Birgit Heckemann, RN, PhD coordinates Gothenburg Pain Lab’s activities and public relations.
Gothenburg Pain Lab is a multidisciplinary, clinical research group.
Our aim is to improve pain relief in acute, chronic and cancer-related pain conditions through innovative, person-centred, and opioid-sparing treatments.
Our research focus is on neuromodulation techniques such as Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), spinal cord stimulation and opioid-free treatment in acute pain in anesthesia and intensive care, as well as in chronic and cancer-related pain conditions.
We combine quantitative (e.g. Randomized Controlled Trials) and qualitative research methods, and actively involve patients as partners in our research projects to develop, test and implement novel and clinically relevant pain care solutions.

Our Research
Our research focuses on the patient experience of acute, chronic and cancer-related pain and on testing person-centred interventions for the better treatment of these pain conditions.
Our Network
Our research network connects us to individual researchers, research groups, networks, and organizations.

What we do
Gothenburg Pain Lab is a research platform for national and international, interdisciplinary research with a focus on person-centred, acute, chronic and cancer-related pain management.
